Collecting: Fishing lures

Larry Cox King Features Syndicate

Q: I have several fishing lures from the mid-1960s, including Jitterbug, Sputterbug and Heddon Crazy Crawler. All are in their original packaging and unused. Any value? — Daryl, Laconia, N.H.

A: One of the better reference books with current values is Classic Fishing Lures by Russell E. Lewis (KP Books, $27.99). This fully illustrated guide is available at most larger bookstores and features products from the big six lure makers — Heddon, Creek Chub, Paw Paw, Pfleuger, Shakespeare and South Bend — in addition to many of the smaller distributors. This one guide should help you establish values for the lures in your collection.

Q: I have five Peter Max posters from 1969, all personally signed. Can you direct me to an outlet? — John, Albuquerque, N.M.

A: Timmy W. Miller is an appraiser who specializes in Peter Max materials. Write to him c/o Flat Signed Rare Books, 3415 West End Ave., No. 1101, Nashville, TN 37203.

Q: I have a set of china that was made in Czechoslovakia. Who can I contact to sell it? — Pat, Paramus, N.J.

A: Your best bet is to check the dealers listed in the business pages of your local phone book. Three that specialize in antiques in your area are: Another Facet, 150 West Pleasant Ave., Maywood, NJ 07607; Manhattan Arts and Antique Center, 1050 2nd Ave., New York, NY 10022; and Rose Hill Auction Gallery, 35 South Van Brunt St., Englewood, NJ 07631. The Manhattan Arts and Antique Center features more than 100 dealers, many who specialize in both china and porcelain.

Q: Do you know of anyone who might be interested in my collection of more than 100 matchbook covers? It used to be a major advertising item but not so much today. — Stanley, Swarthmore, Pa.

A: There are several clubs for collectors. One of the better ones is the American Matchcover Collectors Club, P.O. Box 18481, Asheville, NC 28814. Bill Retskin is the contact person, and he has agreed to advise you.
