Today’s project
Before the era of mass production, every professional woodworker stored and carried his tools in a sturdy, handsome tool chest. This meticulously constructed chest served two purposes: it protected the source of his livelihood while serving as a testament to his skill with the tools that it held. This do-it-yourself version combines that tradition of Old World craftsmanship with the convenience of a modern mechanic’s-style tool chest.
Featuring 13 felt-lined drawers underneath a large storage compartment, the project provides space for plenty of tools while keeping everything organized, protected and accessible. Details such as rubber feet and brass hardware add to its durability and enhance the chest’s classic appeal.
Easy and inexpensive to build (even if you’re not a master craftsman), the project is constructed almost entirely of plywood. Although the chest requires precise measuring and cutting in order for the drawers to fit properly, actual construction is simple. Just cut out the pieces, assemble the drawers and the chest, install the hardware, apply finish of choice and fill with your own valuable tools.
The completed tool chest measures 24 inches long by 20 inches tall by 12 inches deep.
The Precision Tool Chest plan, No. 788, is $9.95 and includes step-by-step instructions with photos, construction diagrams, a complete shopping list and cutting schedule and a toll-free help line for project questions.
Create a companion piece for the precision tool chest with a woodworking bench plan, No. 866, for $9.95. A catalog picturing hundreds of do-it-yourself projects is $2. Please include $4 for postage and handling (except catalog-only orders) and allow about two weeks for delivery.
