Twins face same story

With three losses in their last four games, the Minnesota Twins are facing the probability of a familiar scenario: starting the postseason at Yankee Stadium.

The Twins missed another chance to move ahead in the division race Saturday when Jon Garland took a shutout into the ninth inning and led the Chicago White Sox to a 6-3 win at Minneapolis.

That left Detroit with a magic number of one to win the American League Central.

The Tigers won the season series with the Twins 11-8 and will win the division if the teams tie.

Royals 9, Tigers 6: At Detroit, playoff-bound Detroit missed a chance to clinch the Central when David DeJesus hit a two-run triple in Kansas City’s seven-run first inning, leading the Royals to a victory over the Tigers.

Following a 1 1/2-hour rain delay at the start, Kansas City sent 12 batters to the plate in the first inning.

The Royals led 4-0 after Mike Sweeney’s two-run homer.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland pulled starter Zach Miner after he threw 32 pitches, lasting only one-third of an inning.

Detroit right-hander Justin Verlander, scratched from his start with arm fatigue, played catch before the game and said that his arm was fine
