Jackson hip in more ways than one now
Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson had right hip replacement surgery and is expected to be released from an El Segundo, Calif., hospital today.
Team spokesman John Black said there is no timetable for the 61-year-old coach’s return to training camp, which opened Tuesday with assistant coach Kurt Rambis running the drills.
The 45-minute operation was performed at the Centinela Hospital Medical Center. Jackson, who will be re-evaluated next week, said Monday at the team’s media day that he plans to be ready when the Lakers open the season Oct. 31 against Phoenix.
Stern must rule on Brown
It’s now up to NBA commissioner David Stern to decide if Larry Brown is entitled to the remainder of his salary from the Knicks.
The fired New York coach wrapped up a second day of hearings at the NBA offices. His financial fate now rests in Stern’s hands.
After James Dolan fired Brown in June, the Madison Square Garden chairman refused to pay Brown the $40 million that was left for the remaining four years on his contract.
Dolan cited Brown’s refusal to follow the company’s media policies and his tendency to overstep his role as coach as key reasons for withholding the coach’s salary. A clause in Brown’s contract made Stern the arbiter if there was any dispute.
