Cheneyfest begins Friday

The public is invited to Cheney on Friday and Saturday for the first Cheneyfest.

The celebration, which organizers hope will become an annual event, will be held on Second Street between D and G.

It will feature a beer garden, live music, food and dozens of other vendors. All proceeds will benefit the Duncan Relocation Fund and Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service.

Duncan is a black Russian terrier dog that is expected to be reunited with his owner, Kevin Greer of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, in January.

The two were introduced to each other over the summer in Cheney. More than $5,000 has been raised for Duncan’s trip and veterinary bills under the leadership of Cheney Police Chief Jeff Sale.

Leftover money is being donated to SCRAPS.

The 1 ½-year-old Duncan will be featured during halftime of the Eastern Washington University football game against Montana at 2:05 p.m. Saturday.

Friday hours are: festival vendors, noon to 8 p.m.; beer garden, noon to 1 a.m.; carnival games, 4 to 8 p.m.

Saturday hours are: pet fair, 10 a.m. (register by 9:30 a.m.); vendors, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; beer garden, 10 a.m. to 1 a.m.
