Charges won’t be filed
A repentant Albert Haynesworth won’t be charged with assault for bashing his cleat into the bare head of Dallas Cowboys center Andre Gurode. An unprecedented five-game suspension may not be the end of his punishment, however.
After consulting his family all week, Gurode said Thursday he’s decided not to press charges against the Tennessee Titans defensive tackle.
But with their fans still angry about Haynesworth’s latest trouble, the Titans are investigating their options and trying to decide if they want him around anymore, according to spokesman Robbie Bohren.
As a former player himself and co-chairman of the competition committee, Titans coach Jeff Fisher has been angry with his top run stopper all week. Fisher did not immediately return a telephone message.
“To me, the respect factor was violated by Albert,” he said Monday.
Seven games will remain on Tennesse’s schedule once Haynesworth’s five-game suspension ends.
The five-year veteran has one more $5.5 million season on his contract, but the winless Titans will have enough salary cap room in 2007 to easily absorb the hit if they release him.
Culpepper misses part of practice
Miami Dolphins quarterback Daunte Culpepper was added to the team’s injury report because of a shoulder problem, and missed at least a portion of the team’s daily workout.
The Dolphins did not specify if Culpepper, who tore knee ligaments last season and is still battling mobility issues caused by that injury, missed the entire practice.
He was listed as probable for Sunday’s game at New England.
Chiefs say left tackle Turley is out
Kansas City Chiefs left tackle Kyle Turley will not play Sunday against Arizona.
The thinning number of offensive lineman even forced an unusual move at practice when defensive tackle Lionel Dalton was asked to work as a scout team guard.
“The problem you have is you run out of players, it puts a strain on everyone else in practice. Sometimes you lose sight of that,” said coach Herm Edwards. “Lionel Dalton got the game ball. He did a great job. I told him he’s a two-way player.”
Turley, trying to come back from a two-year absence brought on by back surgery, has been out two weeks with a sore and stiff back.
Colts DT Simon will miss season
Former Pro Bowl defensive tackle Corey Simon will miss the rest of the season after being placed on the non-football illness-injury list by the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts, citing a decision to protect Simon’s privacy, did not divulge the illness.
Simms has no regrets about playing
Speaking publicly for the first time since having his spleen removed following a game last month, Tampa Bay quarterback Chris Simms said he’s not second-guessing himself about remaining on the field with an injury that possibly ended his season.
“I want to play football. I want to be out there. It’s what I love to do,” the son of Super Bowl-winning quarterback Phil Simms said.
Around the league
Cincinnati linebacker David Pollack will know in a couple of months whether the cracked bone in his neck is healing properly or whether he’ll need career-ending surgery to fix it. … Buffalo strong safety Matt Bowen has missed nearly two months with a broken bone in his lower right leg, not a bruise as the team initially reported. … The Jacksonville Jaguars will be without Pro Bowl defensive tackle Marcus Stroud, receiver Matt Jones and defensive end Marcellus Wiley against the New York Jets on Sunday. All three players were downgraded from doubtful to out Thursday.
