A Spokane Valley woman known as Amazing Grace for her work in the community was recently recognized with a national award for her service as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and other organizations.

In September, Grace Graham was given the Chapel of Four Chaplains Legion of Honor Award.

The award is named after four chaplains of different faiths who gave their life jackets to soldiers abandoning the USAT Dorchester as it sunk off the coast of Greenland in 1943. All four drowned.

According to the organization, the Legion of Honor Award recognizes those “whose lives model the kind of selfless service to community, nation and humanity without regard to race, religion or creed, so dramatically exemplified by the four chaplains.”

Graham has volunteered for Meals on Wheels for 18 years and continues to do so, she said.

The chaplain of the Spokane Valley Eagles club suggested she be nominated for the award.
