Katie Mackin had 17 kills Tuesday as third-seeded Gonzaga Prep beat No. 6 Shadle Park 27-25, 20-25, 25-21, 17-25, 15-13 in the first round of the District 8 4A tournament at G-Prep.

Brittnee Brown added 52 assists to lead the Bullpups. Brynn DeLong led the Highlanders with 23 kills and 10 digs.

In another tourney opener, No. 4 Ferris beat No. 5 Central Valley 25-10, 25-14, 25-17 at Ferris. Maddy Lorenz had 13 digs, nine kills and two aces to lead the victorious Saxons. Shannon Giusti led the Bears with 22 assists. … Today at 7 p.m., Ferris advances to play at No. 1 Mead and G-Prep will play at No. 2 Lewis and Clark. … Shadle will play a loser-out game against CV at 9 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Spokane High School.

Katie Hinrichs had 21 digs and four aces to lead the Greyhounds (13-0). … Riverside topped Clarkston (1-12) 25-11, 23-25, 25-22, 25-20 in Riverside. The Rams (8-5) were led by Kayla Newberg, who had 20 kills, four aces and two blocks.

West Valley’s Kaley Way had a hat trick as the Eagles pounded Chewelah 15-0 in a Great Northern League match in Chewelah (0-16, 0-14). Dee Dee Garbe and Krystal McCarthy added two goals apiece for WV (11-5, 11-2), which outshot the Cougars 30-2. … In other league action, Taddy Grow scored a goal in the 70th minute off an assist from LeAnn Daubel to break a scoreless tie and give host Riverside (5-10, 5-8) a 1-0 win over rival Deer Park (6-9, 6-7). … Jessica Thomas had three goals and an assist to guide visiting Pullman to an 8-0 shutout of Medical Lake (2-12, 2-11). Cory Druffel added a goal and two assists for the Greyhounds (14-2, 11-2).
