Chiefs win second straight at Everett tournament

EVERETT, Wash. – Matt McCue scored in the first period and the Spokane Chiefs won for the second night in a row, defeating the Seattle Thunderbirds 3-1 in the Everett Silvertips Preseason Hockey Tournament.

McCue scored in the 13th minute on assists from Drayson Bowman and Derek Ryan for a 1-0 lead at the end of the first.

In the second, Bowman scored the first of two Chiefs power-play goals at 16:41. Rookie Mitch Wahl assisted on the play.

Bud Holloway scored for Seattle to make it a one-goal game early in the third, but Michael Grabner scored an insurance power-play goal at 14:26 to round out the scoring for Spokane. Wahl and Justin Falk assisted on the play.

The Chiefs outshot the Thunderbirds 32-29 and finished the night 2 for 13 on the power play.

Two-year veteran goalie Thomas Stehr stopped 15 shots for Spokane. Darcy Kuemper, who will start in goal tonight, went in for the final two minutes and made one save.

The Chiefs play their final game of the tournament today against Vancouver at 3 p.m.

Spokane has five more exhibition games to play in preseason action, including two next week in the Tri-City Americans Tournament. The Chiefs will host one home exhibition game on Friday, Sept. 15, at Eagles Ice-A-Rena at 7 p.m.
