‘Dutch’ cookie jars worth about $100

The Spokesman-Review

Dear Collector,

In a previous column you wrote about a “Dutch Girl” cookie jar. Well, I have the “Dutch Boy” and wonder if it has about the same value?

While the Girl was made by Shawnee, yours comes from Cronin China Co. under their Pottery Guild of America brand and is sometimes referred to as the “Sailor Boy.” Both date to the 1940s, and at $100, have similar values.

Dear Collector,

I am interested in knowing the value of my Winchester 30-30 model 1894 rifle that has serial number 75XXX on the barrel?

Considered by some to be the classic long gun, your lever action model ‘94 was manufactured in 1896 and should be looked at by an expert appraiser because it is a true antique with a potential value of several thousand dollars.

Dear Collector,

Can you tell us what this item is? It was found in a drawer of an abandoned bureau stored in our attic when we bought our house last year.

Remember the 1950s TV program “Captain Gallant,” the adventures of a foreign legionnaire starring Buster Crabbe? Well, your doohickey is a badge initially holding a photo of Crabbe; which now has a value of $50 with photo and about $10 without photo.

Dear Collector,

I have been going crazy trying to find the maker of a porcelain figurine that is marked with an anchor and letters “GH.”

Located in the town of Haldensleben, Hubbe Brothers (Gebruder in German) manufactured both earthernware and porcelain items from 1875 to 1898.

Dear Collector,

Would you please tell me if this $1 Silver Certificate is worth anything?

Given the amount of wear and tear that’s normal on your 1899 bill, I’d say it’s worth at least $20.

Dear Collector,

We bought this Wagner Ware item at a church bazaar but haven’t figured out what it was used for; can you tell us?

It appears to be an overgrown toast rack, but it’s really a stand used to display skillets for sale. Probably dating from the 1920s, it has a current value of $200.

Dear Collector,

I like to pick up odds and ends at flea markets and last week I got this pair of Boy Scout cufflinks for $4 (bargained down from $7); did I get a good deal?

More than likely your circa 1918 silver Tenderfoot links are worth in excess of $100.

Dear Collector,

The small china bowl in these photos has a mark reading “Spode Copeland;” what was its purpose?

This particular mark dates the time of manufacture to around 1880. The maker, W.T. Copland intended your blue willow pattern bowl for sugar, even though it has a bail handle and no lid; an arrangement not employed nowadays. Value is about $150.

Dear Collector,

Please tell me how old this Dawson’s Ale bottle is, what it’s worth and where can I sell it?

Dawson’s Brewery, located in New Bedford, Mass., produced this can in the 1950s. It’s worth maybe $200. No, I won’t tell you where to sell it.
