Minister to speak about Ground Zero

The Episcopal Diocese of Spokane is presenting its third annual Stewardship Conference Friday and Saturday.

This year’s keynote speaker is the Rev. Daniel Matthews, the rector emeritus of St. Paul Chapel, near Ground Zero in New York City.

Matthews will speak about the events of Sept. 11, 2001, and the eight months that followed providing relief and refuge to the workers at Ground Zero. He will speak Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at the Spokane Athletic Club, 1002 W. Riverside Ave.

He also will lead services Sunday at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., at 8 and 10 a.m.

‘Back to Church’ celebrations

With school back in session, many churches are holding “Back to Church” celebrations.

Colbert Presbyterian Church, 4211 E. Colbert Road, Colbert, is holding an outdoor service Sunday at 9:30 a.m. in the pavilion.

Worshippers should bring lawn chairs or blankets.

Children in preschool through the sixth grade are invited to Kidspace, a Sunday morning education program. About 11:15 a.m., there will be a picnic and ice cream social. Everyone should pack a lunch, and the youths of the church will serve ice cream.

Manito United Methodist Church, 3220 S. Grand Blvd., is presenting Back to Church School Sunday at 9:15 a.m.

There will be Sunday school for children and adults. Worship service begins at 10:30 a.m., and there will be a potluck and free hot dog lunch at noon.

Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church, 4102 S. Crestline St., is presenting a Sunday school kick-off and pancake breakfast Sunday at 8:30 a.m.

Children 2 years old through the sixth grade and their parents are invited to attend the breakfast. At 9 a.m. there will be an orientation for the parents about the church’s children’s programs.

Parents will also be eligible for a drawing for a $50 gift certificate at Vin Rouge.

Messiah Lutheran Church, 4202 N. Belt St., is presenting a Rally Day Carnival Sunday after church at 11:15 a.m.

The celebration will include a putting green, face painting, games and a cake walk. There will also be a hot dog lunch with chips and ice cream at noon.

Timberview Christian Fellowship, 15511 N. Howe Road, is holding its annual fall kick-off Sunday.

The worship service will begin at 10 a.m. After the service, there will be a country fair.

Concerts

First Church of the Nazarene, 9004 N. Country Homes Blvd., is presenting the Liberty Quartet Sunday at 6 p.m.

The group has performed all over the country and sings traditional Southern gospel music.

The concert is free, and there will be a free-will offering taken.

“ The Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., is presenting biblical songs by Dvorak Sunday at 4 p.m.

Soprano Andrea Dawson and organist/pianist Janet Satre Ahrend will perform the songs, written in 1894. Dawson will sing the songs in their original Czechoslovakian.

The church also will be open for self-guided tours from 1 to 4 p.m., and a free will offering will be taken.

Classes

“Spokane Central Adventist Church, 828 W. Spofford Ave., is presenting five weeks of lectures Fridays through Tuesdays starting Saturday at 7 p.m.

Lyle Albrecht is speaking at these “Revelation lectures” to discuss Bible prophecy, the origin of evil and more. The classes are free.

There also will be a free program for children ages 4 through 12. The program is titled “Revelation Speaks Peace for Children.” For ages 3 and younger, there will be nursery care.

Anyone who attends the class on opening night will receive a free Bible.

Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church, 312 W. Hawthorne Road, is starting its free adult Sunday school classes on Sunday at 9:45 a.m.

There will be several classes held at once in different areas of the church. This first week, students will have a choice of learning about “Christians in a World of Violence” or “The Book of Genesis.”

Rummage sales

First Church of the Nazarene, 9004 N. Country Homes Blvd., is holding a rummage sale today from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. until all the items have been sold.

Proceeds will benefit Upward Basketball, one of the church’s children’s ministries.

Along with the sale, there will be hot dogs and beverages for sale.
