Ang Dorjee Sherpa stayed at the Spokane home of Chris Kopczynski last weekend, along with Lhakpa Dorjee Sherpa. All three men have climbed Mount Everest, but the Sherpas are in a league of their own.

Kopczynski’s local mentor, Joe Collins, put the visit in perspective, from a climber’s viewpoint: “Gee, that’s like having John the Baptist over for dinner.”

Ang Dorjee, 36, has climbed the world’s highest peak 10 times. He lives much of the year in the Tri-Cities, with his two children and wife, Michelle Gregory, who works for Battelle. During the climbing season, he goes back to Nepal, were his numerous expeditions have made him a rock star in the Himalayan sense of the term.

Lhakpa Dorjee, 48, is among the most famous Sherpas in his country of Nepal, having climbed Everest 11 times, all without supplemental oxygen, plus about 60 other expeditions that have forged his fame for strength and mountain smarts.

Noting that Lhakpa Dorjee was almost always holding Ang Dorjee’s baby at the Kopcynski dinner, Gregory explained, “They can’t help themselves around a baby. They have to pick it up. It’s a Sherpa thing.”
