Cubs 8, Braves 3: At Atlanta, Derrek Lee homered twice to drive in four runs and Jacque Jones hit a three-run shot as Chicago avoided a sweep in Atlanta with only their fourth win in 22 games.

Cardinals 7, Astros 0: At St. Louis, Chris Carpenter threw a six-hitter and Ronnie Belliard had four RBIs, helping St. Louis to victory over Houston. Juan Encarnacion had two RBIs for St. Louis, which dominated in the first of seven meetings with Houston over the final 20 games.

Marlins 16, Mets 5: At Miami, Cody Ross tied Florida records with three home runs and seven RBIs, while Anibal Sanchez allowed four hits and struck out eight in seven innings as Florida beat New York. Miguel Cabrera added three RBIs and took the N.L. batting lead with a .340 average.

Pirates 4, Brewers 3: At Pittsburgh, Zach Duke struck out a season-high seven in eight innings and Chris Duffy had a tiebreaking, two-run single, leading Pittsburgh over Milwaukee. Freddy Sanchez went 1 for 4 and dropped to second in the N.L. batting race at .339.

Nationals 7, Diamondbacks 6: At Phoenix, Jose Vidro drove in four runs, Nick Johnson hit a two-run single and Washington edged Arizona. Washington won for only the second time in 13 road games.
