A week for chocolate lovers
•On Sept. 13, 1916, Roald Dahl, author of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” (1964), is born in South Wales. He also wrote the screenplays for “Charlie” (with a title change — the movie was called “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”) and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” (1968).
•On Sept. 12, 1846, English poet Elizabeth Barrett sneaks out of the house and meets Robert Browning at St. Marylebone Parish Church, where they are married. She returned home for a week, keeping the marriage a secret, then fled with Browning to Italy.
•On Sept. 17, 1934, 18-year-old actress Olivia de Havilland makes her stage debut at the Hollywood Bowl. De Havilland became an accomplished actress, and is best remembered for her role as Melanie in “Gone with the Wind.”
• On Sept. 16, 1949, Warner Bros. introduces the Road Runner in the cartoon short “Fast and Furry-ous.” Like the sounds of countless other Warner Bros. cartoon characters, the Road Runner’s cheerful “beep, beep!” was provided by Mel Blanc.
•On Sept. 15, 1954, the famous picture of Marilyn Monroe, laughing as her skirt is blown up by the blast from a subway vent, is shot during the filming of “The Seven Year Itch.” The scene infuriated her husband, Joe DiMaggio, who felt it was exhibitionist. The couple divorced shortly after.
