Names will be on bricks at Rogers

Former and current John R. Rogers High School students can cast their name in stone during construction under way at the North Side school.

A “Wall of Remembrance” in the Pirates’ Cove courtyard will be built with 3,132 bricks engraved with the name and graduation year of alumni and students who choose to take part.

For a donation of $50 or more, people can have a brick engraved with the name of their choice. More than 16,000 graduates already have been mailed an invitation to participate.

Proceeds will be used to assist the Rogers Alumni Association and the John R. Rogers Alumni and Friends Foundation in funding college scholarships and various programs and activities for students.

For more information or to order a brick, call Donna at 487-5968 or send e-mail to drogersalm@omnicast.net.

WASL scores released

Last week, the state Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction released WASL scores for students who took the exam in 2006.

This year, students in grades three through eight and grade 10, took some portion – reading, math, writing, or science – of the Washington Assessment of Student Learning. Those scores are now available at the OSPI Web site.

The test is the state’s answer to the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

Under the act, the state is required to provide parents with a “report card” of progress that schools and districts are making on the exam each year, including test scores. Additional demographic information about schools, such as the percentage of students qualifying for free and reduced-price lunches and the percentage of special education students served, is also available on the reports.

To view a school report go to http://www.k12.wa.us/ and click on School Report Card.
