Bingham leads Senior Men’s Amateur
Spokane’s Dick Bingham shot a one-over 73 Tuesday to remain in the lead at the Washington State Golf Association Senior Men’s Golf Amateur Championship at the Spokane Country Club.
Bingham shot a 6-under 66 on Monday and is one stroke up on Jeff Remington entering today’s final round. Colville’s Kent Brown and Spokane’s Jim O’Rourke are tied for fifth at 143.
Women’s golf
The University of Idaho shot a three-round total of 903 to finish sixth overall at the Salbasgeon Suites Invitational hosted by Oregon State University.
Amanda Jacobs tied for 14th for the Vandals with a three-round total of 224 at the 6,271-yard Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis, Ore.
Washington State, Eastern Washington and Gonzaga also competed at the tournament.
Washington State took eighth-place with a three-round total of 907. Amy Eneroth led the Cougars with a final-round 71 to earn a tie for third-place at 218 overall.
Eastern Washington shot a three-round total of 928 to take 12th place. Leading the way for the Eagles was Eva Yoe, who shot a total of 227 to earn a tie for 25th.
Gonzaga finished last out of 17 teams with a three-round total of 961. Sarah Sheffield was the Bulldogs top finisher, shooting a 232 to earn a tie for 43rd.
Men’s golf
Gonzaga shot a three-round total of 881 to earn a tie for ninth-place at the Purple and Red Invitational hosted by Weber State University. Trevor Loe shot a final-round 68 to earn a tie for fourth at 213 at the Valley View Golf Club in Layton, Utah.
Idaho finished seven strokes behind, shooting an 888 to take 13th. Colter Kautzmann led the Vandals with a three-round total of 218, earning a tie for 23rd.
Football
Three different Whitworth football players earned player of the week honors from the Northwest Conference.
Senior quarterback Joel Clark earned the offensive honor after throwing for 199 yards and running for 132 more in the Pirates 37-16 win over La Verne on Saturday.
Junior strong safety Jay Tully was awarded the defensive honor after amassing 10 tackles and breaking up a La Verne scoring opportunity by intercepting a pass in the end zone.
Cornerback Ryan Marshall, junior, was the Special Teams Player of the Week after returning three punts for 65 yards and blocking an extra point attempt and returning it for a defensive two-point conversion, the first in Whitworth football history.
This is the first time in history that Whitworth has won all three awards in the same week.
Volleyball
Micaela Parker and Claudia Houle had 17 kills apiece to lead Montana (4-6) to a 30-28, 30-25, 25-30, 29-31, 15-9 win over Gonzaga (4-10) in a non-conference match in Missoula. Becky Jones and Elaina Renius led Gonzaga with 19 kills each.
