Mike Cmos Jr. sculpture dedication on Wednesday

A sculpture of a city employee killed in a wastewater plant accident will be dedicated next week.

Mike Cmos Jr. died in 2004 when the plant’s sewage digesters overfilled and burst.

The dedication of “Fish On,” a copper and bronze sculpture created by Sister Paula Turnbull, will be Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.

The reception will be held at the city of Spokane Water Reclamation Facility, 4401 Aubrey L. White Parkway. Mayor Dennis Hession and Sister Turnbull will be among the speakers.

The artwork is on the northwest side of the Water Treatment Facility along the south side of Aubrey L. White Parkway and can be seen by visitors to Riverside State Park.

The sculpture depicts Cmos and his daughter, Jen, fishing. The figures are roughly life size. The work was funded by the city and proceeds from the sale of caps to city employees, friends and acquaintances of Mike Cmos.

Sister Turnbull also created the “Garbage Goat” for Riverfront Park. Her work also is displayed at Fire Station 4 and in numerous cities and churches throughout the country.
