WSU loses Pac-10 opener to Stanford

Kristin Richards’ match-high 15 kills was too much for Washington State despite 10-kill performances from Jackie Albright and Brittany Johnson as Stanford (10-1, 1-0) rolled over the Cougars (12-3, 0-1) 30-17, 30-16, 30-23 in Pacific-10 Conference volleyball play Thursday in Pullman.

•Also in the Pac-10, Washington (11-1, 1-0) made short work of California (11-1, 0-1) 30-17, 30-16, 30-24. Courtney Thompson had 44 assists for the Huskies.

•In the Western Athletic Conference, Amanda Bowman notched six kills and six digs as Idaho (1-10, 0-1) was tripped up by New Mexico (15-0, 1-0) 30-20, 30-21, 30-17.

•In the Big Sky Conference, Eastern Washington (7-5. 0-3) couldn’t survive against Northern Arizona’s .324 hitting percentage. The Eagles fell 32-30, 30-26, 30-17. Brittany Page led the Eagles’ offense with 14 kills.

Women’s soccer

With 14:15 left in the second half, Asha Richardson beat Washington State keeper Amber Wittmers from 17 yards out to give New Mexico a 1-0 victory over the Cougars in Pacific-10 action Thursday afternoon.

Carly Dobratz led the Cougar offense with five shots including a miss off the crossbar in the first half.

Washington (4-5) was shut out by Brigham Young 1-0 despite outshooting the Cougars 18-11. Dani Bridges struck the crossbar in the 22nd minute.
