West Valley volleyball 3-0 in league play
West Valley’s volleyball team finds itself in good company after improving to 3-0 in the Frontier League.
The Eagles share first-place with defending state champion Pullman and postseason perennial Colville. They needed four games to hand Deer Park (3-1) its first league loss on Tuesday.
Melissa Mauro had 13 kills and eight digs, while setter Alyssa Wold had 33 assists.
WV hosts Pullman Tuesday in a league showdown.
Meanwhile, Spokane Valley’s three Greater Spokane League teams struggle. Central Valley (1-2) got its first league win on Thursday, a hard-fought five-game win over North Central. Kristin Telin and Allison Giusti each had 13 kills and Giusti had 31 digs and six service aces. Freshman setter Shannon Giusti had 48 assists.
Earlier in the week NC had beaten University (1-2), also in five close games. Ashlee Valkenaar had 10 kills and 30 digs. Kasey Jurich had 38 assists.
East Valley is 0-3.
It’s Knights vs. Bears
Central Valley travels to East Valley and University hosts Mead next Friday in two important football games for the Spokane Valley teams.
The Knights, at 2-1, played Mead and unbeatens U-Hi and Gonzaga Prep played Friday night in earlier games. The outcomes for both are in today’s Spokesman-Review sports pages.
CV, which played North Central last night, last week lost to G-Prep 37-14, while the Titans went to 2-0 in the GSL with a comeback 21-20 win over Mt. Spokane.
The Bears trailed 17-0 at half and could never recover despite Luke Clift‘s 12-for-24 passing for 155 yards and touchdowns to Brad Whitley and Jake Igo.
U-Hi fell behind Mt. Spokane 20-9 in the third quarter, but rallied late in the fourth on two Tyler Carlson touchdowns. Carlson now has 269 yards rushing, third in league, and five touchdowns. He’s seven yards ahead of EV’s Ryan Campbell.
EV wins soccer upset
East Valley became part of a new day in Greater Spokane League soccer.
Heading into Friday’s match at Mt. Spokane, the Knights, following a 1-0 upset over University, found themselves tied for first place.
EV and Shadle Park shared the lead along with perennial contender Ferris. Teams like the Titans, Mead and Gonzaga Prep are looking up at them.
Haley Orwick took a crossing pass from Amie Weiler to break a scoreless tie with six minutes remaining in the contest. Win improved the Knights to 2-0 in the GSL.
The Titans had beaten EV 3-0 in an earlier nonleague contest. They are now 1-1 in league, while Central Valley lost 7-0 to the Bullpups and dropped to 0-2.
In the Great Northern League West Valley (4-1) is part of a four-way first-place tie after beating Deer Park 7-0 and Chewelah 12-0. Dee Dee Garbe scored three-goal hat tricks in each game, giving her 10 goals for the season. All 12 Eagles goals against Chewelah came in the first half.
Cross country tight
Central Valley and University remain in the thick of a taut Greater Spokane League girls cross country league, but neither is undefeated.
After beating the Bears last week, U-Hi (4-1) was beaten by Mt. Spokane to slip into third place. CV (3-1), victor over East Valley (1-3), is part of the five-team league race that includes unbeaten teams Mt. Spokane, Mead and once-beaten Lewis and Clark.
During Wednesday’s races, Knight Lauren Bergam was an individual winner, by more than a minute over a pair of Bears.
CV’s boys (3-1) also beat EV, Jayson Taylor, Jason Stoker, Nathan Damiano and Bryce Aguilar (whose dad is a former Knights runner) claiming the top four spots.
University’s boys (2-3) broke even in their race, Anthony Brown finishing second overall.
Softball good to pair
Greater Spokane League slowpitch softball newcomers University and Central Valley found themselves atop the league a third of the way through the season.
The Titans are 5-0 and Bears 4-1 in the high-scoring version of the game.
