Family Bible

Larry Cox King Features Syndicate

Q: I have a family Bible from 1879. The binding is in bad shape and the front and back cover are not attached. How much is it worth? — Joe, Fargo, N.D.

A: As you might imagine, Bibles, even very old Bibles, are plentiful and difficult to sell. For a second opinion, I suggest you contact the International Society of Bible Collectors, 6413 Snow Apple Drive, Clarkston, MI 48346.

Q: I have a small collection of older glass. Is there a good basic reference book you can recommend that will help me identify my various pieces? — Sue, Pueblo West, Colo.

A: There are several excellent guides. One of my favorites is “Glass A to Z” by David J. Shotwell (KP Books, $24.95). It is a quick reference that is especially helpful in identifying manufacturers’ marks.

“Warman’s Depression Glass: A Value and Identification Guide” by Ellen T. Schroy (KP Books, $27.95), features information about 170 patterns and includes current market values for more than 10,000 items. Both may be ordered from the publisher at 1-888-457-2873.

Q: I have a couple of Japanese figurines that are marked “Made in Occupied Japan.” A friend has told me they are extremely valuable. Can you tell me how I can find out more about them? — M.J.H., via e-mail

A: Not all occupied Japanese pieces are valuable. For example, recent sales on eBay have included a ceramic frog, $14; an angel planter, $20; a cigarette box and matching lighter, $30; and a six-piece tea set, $40. “Occupied Japan Collectibles: Identification and Value Guide” by Gene Florence is highly recommended. It is published by Collector Books and available at most larger bookstores.

Q: During the 1970s, my mom bought several whiskey decanters, and I would like to know how much they are now worth. — S.L.M., Fort White, Fla.

A: Bernie Durance is both an expert and dealer of whiskey decanters. Write to him c/o BVD on Bottles, 1008 North Star Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80906. He is especially knowledgeable about Jim Beam issues.
