Whits win in 2 OTs
Shane Stonemetz scored on a 2-yard run on third-and-goal – his only carry of the game – and Cam Collings booted the extra point to lift the 17th-ranked Whitworth Pirates (3-0) to a 14-13 double-overtime victory over the Wisconsin-Stout Blue Devils (2-1) on Saturday in Menomonie, Wis.
After both teams missed field-goal tries in the first overtime, the Blue Devils took a 13-7 lead on a 1-yard run by Tanner Kattre. The score stood after Brandon Raciborski missed the extra-point kick.
Wisconsin-Stout took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 71-yard run by Ryan Englebert.
The lead held up until 3 seconds remained in regulation.
Whitworth quarterback Joel Clark led the Pirates on a seven-play, 76-yard drive in 1:03 that ended with a Clark-to-Jay Tully 4-yard touchdown pass. Collings nailed the extra point to send the game to overtime.
Clark finished 18 of 31 on the day for 216 yards with three interceptions.
Michael Allan caught six passes for a game-high 108 yards.
Puget Sound 21, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 0: Kavin Williams threw a pair of touchdown passes and Isaac Blum returned a punt 69 yards for a score to lead the Loggers (3-0) to a non-conference victory over the Stags (1-1) in Tacoma.
It was Puget Sound’s first shutout in 180 games.
Minnesota-Duluth 31, Central Washington 25: Ted Schlafke connected with Dominique Johnson for a 22-yard touchdown with 2:51 left in the game to rally the Bulldogs (3-1, 1-1 North Central Conference) to a victory over the Wildcats (2-2, 0-2) in Duluth, Minn.
North Dakota 26, Western Washington 20: Freshman Ryan Chappell rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns to lead the fourth-ranked Fighting Sioux (4-0, 2-0 North Central Conference) to a victory over the Vikings (1-3, 0-2) in Grand Forks, N.D.
