Jackson strolls into Hall of Fame
Phil Jackson rode his string of three separate NBA championship three-peats straight to the Basketball Hall of Fame in his first year of consideration on Monday.
Another coach who has achieved success with two teams, Roy Williams, joins Jackson in heading a class of seven to enter in September.
Also selected were 1966 NCAA men’s champion Texas Western, four-time WNBA championship coach Van Chancellor, former NBA referee Mendy Rudolph and international coaches Pedro Ferrandiz of Spain and Mirko Novosel of Yugoslavia.
•LeBron James received treatment for tendinitis in his right knee and is listed as a game-time decision tonight.
•The Dallas Mavericks signed 44-year-old center Kevin Willis to a 10-day contract.
•Stan Heath, fired Arkansas mens’ coach, agreed to a five- year contract at South Florida.
Dana Altman was hired as Heath’s replacement at Arkansas.
•Todd Lickliter of Butler, who Monday was named the National Association of Basketball Coaches’ Division I Coach of the Year, has been hired as the new head coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes.
•Arizona State has extended the contract of women’s coach Charli Turner Thorne.

Lymon recovering
Purdue wide receiver Selwyn Lymon was expected to be released from the hospital in West Lafayette, Ind., later this week as he recovers from being stabbed in the chest last week.
•Athletic officials at the University of Toledo said they don’t know if any more players will be charged in what the FBI says was a point-shaving scheme. Football player Harvey “Scooter” McDougle Jr. was arrested Friday.

Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from next week’s Family Circle Cup in Charleston and will miss making her Fed Cup debut next month because of injuries.
•The Presidents Cup golf tournament will return to Melbourne, Australia, in 2011.
•Resi Stiegler won the women’s giant slalom at the U.S. Alpine Championships in Girdwood, Alaska.
•Former soccer star Diego Maradona will remain in the hospital for at least two more weeks while he recovers from an illness caused by excessive eating, smoking and drinking.
