Lakeside wins culinary meet

Sara Leaming By Sara Leaming

A team of future chefs from Lakeside High School won first place in a knowledge bowl competition at the 2007 Washington Restaurant Association Education Foundation ProStart competition last week.

Students compete against other high school students by taking a written test and participating in a “Jeopardy”-style match that measures their knowledge of the culinary arts.

The Lakeside team from Nine Mile Falls School District also took third place in the all-around category, which includes cooking and knife skills and restaurant management.

Teams from 28 schools around the state competed in Seattle on March 24-25, including Rogers High School from northeast Spokane.

The competition is part of ProStart, a two-year program aimed at helping high school students with careers in the culinary arts and the restaurant industry.

Students participating and placing in the competition receive college scholarships.

More news from Nine Mile Falls

The Lakeside Middle School color guard has received a $700 donation from Spokane Federal Credit Union to purchase new equipment.

The nine-member team from the Nine Mile Falls School District will purchase flags and poles, a news release from the credit union said. Their old equipment consisted of patched flags and poles that caused splinters.

The color guard supports the band and other school activities with its routines, such as halftime shows at the middle school varsity boys basketball games and performances at the Lakeside High School varsity girls basketball games.

The team is preparing for the Junior Lilac Parade in May.
