One teen killed, 2 injured in crash

A teenage boy died and two teenage girls were injured after they tried to elude police after shoplifting a box of donut holes early Wednesday, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

The teens crashed their Subaru station wagon into a large piece of earth-moving machinery near Felts Field, causing a wreck so bad that firefighters had to cut off the vehicle’s roof to reach the passengers, said Spokane County sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Dave Reagan.

When crews pulled the teens from the wreckage, the 14-year-old boy had severe injuries. The driver, an unlicensed 15-year-old girl, suffered broken bones, and a 15-year-old female passenger had facial cuts.

The teens had reportedly stolen a package of doughnut holes from a Spokane Valley grocery store shortly before the accident.

Spokane Valley police Officer Jeff Getchell said he saw the Subaru driving recklessly and attempted to pull the vehicle over, when the Subaru quickly took off, and the officer lost sight of them.

Getchell did not know the teens had stolen the doughnut holes.

“Before he was able to find them again, they crashed,” Reagan said. The car was found near the intersection of Waterworks and Union, where they were unable to negotiate a turn, Reagan said.

The teens were taken to Deaconess Medical Center. The boy spent most of Wednesday in extremely critical condition and later died. The driver was in stable condition, and the passenger – who was a reported runaway – was in satisfactory condition.

Reagan said he would not release the name of the boy because he is a minor.
