Devil Rays 6, Blue Jays 5: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Akinori Iwamura hit his first major league homer, scored two runs and finished 4 for 4 to help Tampa Bay beat Toronto. Jae Kuk Ryu pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings to get the victory.
Rangers 2, Red Sox 0: At Arlington, Texas, Sammy Sosa had a bloop RBI single in the first inning when he was trying to check his swing and Texas went on to defeat Boston in its home opener. Robinson Tejeda allowed two hits, one of them an infield single, over seven shutout innings.
Orioles 6, Yankees 4: At New York, Melvin Mora got three hits, scored twice, had a delayed steal and made a diving catch at third base to lead Baltimore past New York. Derek Jeter came out in the ninth inning after hobbling around the bases earlier in the game.
Royals 3, Tigers 1: At Kansas City, Mo., Tony Pena Jr.’s third triple in four games keyed a two-run seventh and Kansas City beat Detroit. Jorge De La Rosa went a career-high seven innings in his first start of the year for the Royals.
Angels 5, Athletics 2: At Anaheim, Calif., Vladimir Guerrero and Howie Kendrick homered, and rookie Dustin Moseley pitched six-plus innings in Los Angeles’ victory over Oakland. Moseley, beginning the season in the Angels’ rotation along with Joe Saunders because of injuries to Bartolo Colon and Jered Weaver, allowed a run and five hits.
Twins vs. White Sox, ppd.: At Chicago, the game between Minnesota and Chicago was postponed by cold weather and strong winds. A makeup date has not been scheduled.
