Parks and Rec soccer has record turnout

Correspondent The Spokesman-Review

Spring is in the air, and so are the soccer balls as approximately 534 boys and girls, ages 3 to 12, kicked off the soccer season on area fields last Saturday, Rathdrum Parks and Recreation Director Lance Bridges reports.

“That’s the most kids we’ve ever had,” Bridges said.

With five age divisions and 54 teams, area soccer fields will be busy. All Mini, Mighty and Mega Mite (ages 3 to 8) games will be held at the Lakeland Junior High Football Field. The U-11 teams will play at Crawford Park, at the corner of Ramsey and Lancaster in Hayden Lake; and the U-12 players will kick off in Thayer Park, on Pine Street.

Watching these little guys hustle will give you a smile. Stop by and cheer them on – they will be playing come rain or shine (or snow).

Kids lead spring cleaning effort

Two young women, Amanda Pluid and Sarah Johnson, got tired of seeing litter while walking home from school a couple of weeks ago. So the energetic girls, who attend John Brown Elementary School, took their concerns to the mayor at the last City Council meeting. They offered to organize a city cleanup effort on Earth Day, April 22.

The mayor, delighted with the community-spirited girls – and the offer – agreed to provide trash bags and arrange for trucks to haul off the litter.

The girls are looking for volunteers to join in the effort at 9 a.m. on April 22. Sign-up sheets are available at the Parks and Recreation Department.

Spiritual equipment for American troops

Members of Rathdrum’s United Methodist Church are helping provide “spiritual equipment to U.S. troops deployed in Iraq, Afghanistan and other dangerous locations around the world.” For a donation of $3.25, the church will purchase a Rapid Deployment Kit through the Campus Crusade for Christ International and Military Ministries.

Chaplains around the world hand out nearly 20,000 RDKs, upon request, each month, with over 1.3 million distributed since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

The small, waterproof RDKs include a camouflage-covered New Testament, a devotional and a tract from Campus Crusade. Church members donated $100 (proceeds from a recent bazaar) to the project, and will accept donations through Sunday. Call 687-0071 for more information.

Rotary wine tasting and silent auction

The public is invited to attend Lakeland Sunrise Rotary’s sixth annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction at The Bunkers Restaurant at Twin Lakes Village, from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday. Cost of the event is $15, and tickets will be available at the door.

Odom Distributors is providing the wine and proceeds from the event will be used for community projects or scholarships. Some silent auction items include Mariners tickets, a few rounds of golf, fine wine, gift certificates to area restaurants and gift baskets. A no-host dinner will follow the event.
