New coffeehouse opens in Hayden Creek Plaza

Nils Rosdahl Correspondent

Last week, we discussed details of several businesses that are going into Coeur d’Alene’s north-central corridor, primarily Neider Avenue north. This week and next week, we’ll continue with the parade of new places there.

We’ll start with the “far north,” where Hayden Creek Coffee House opened in the south end of the attractive Hayden Creek Plaza two-building complex.

Celebrating its grand opening today, the business features varieties of Doma coffee and pastries from Sweetwater Bakery.

Amenities include free wireless Internet, a drive-through window, inside seating for 30 people and a cozy fireplace. Small groups are encouraged to arrange meetings there.

Originally coming from Lewiston in the medical/dental fields in 1991, owners Wade and Nancy Fehlman employ seven people.

Hours are from 5:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays. Phone: 772-6236.

Activity at Neider, Government Way

The Sportsman’s Plaza minimall between Costco and the Neider-Government Way intersection is filling fast. The High Nooner restaurant and Mac Odyssey businesses have opened in the past few weeks.

Here’s a look at other businesses coming in:

“Nick ‘N Willie’s World Famous Take ‘N Bake Pizza will offer customers the choice of pizza baked at the store or to be baked at home. The pizzas come in various sizes and flavors, including traditional ingredients and original combinations with the options of different cheeses and four sauces.

The store will open in May with 12 to 15 employees. Hours will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and until 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Originally from Sandpoint, co-owner Brian Long graduated from law school at the University of Idaho and has been an attorney in Coeur d’Alene for 15 years. His pizza partner is Victor Evans of Seattle.

They also opened a Nick ‘N Willie’s in Rathdrum last October. Nick ‘N Willie’s has 70 outlets, primarily in the Northwest.

“Sister companies Budget Blinds and Closet Tailors will open in mid-May in two Sportsman’s Plaza spaces. They will move from the Post Falls Interstate 90 Pleasantview exit, where they’ve been for three years.

Budget Blinds offers consultation, sales and installation of 15 types of custom window treatments (such as shutters, curtains and shades) from 12 companies.

Of nearly 1,200 outlets, the local store ranked eighth in gross sales last year.

Closet Tailors is a specialist in organization, offering shelves, drawers, hangers, racks and other options for closets, garages, laundry rooms and pantries.

With about 100 outlets, the company shares its headquarters with Budget Blinds in Orange, Calif.

Originally from San Diego and Colorado respectively, owners Dan and Carin Baker selected North Idaho for their home 16 years ago. They have 16 employees.

Hours are from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays.

Phone: Budget Blinds at 773-6204 and Closet Tailors at 676-1234.

“Great Clips will open its third North Idaho shop in Sportsman’s Plaza in mid-June. Owner Bob Douthitt also has shops in Post Falls and Hayden and 12 in the Spokane area.

The 10 employees in Coeur d’Alene will offer hairstyling, perms and haircuts for $12 ($10 for kids and senior citizens).

Started in 1982, Great Clips has more than 2,600 outlets with headquarters in Minneapolis.

Douthitt came to the Inland Northwest in 1981 from the East Coast and was a lawyer for 19 years.

Great Clips’ hours in Coeur d’Alene will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.

A Starbucks coffee shop evidently will go in the east (drive-through) space of Sportsman’s Plaza, with one space still available.

This week’s tidbits

“Core Chiropractic opened last week at 116 W. Neider (across from Safeway).

Dr. Allan Joubert’s services include low-force chiropractic that includes an organic nature for people with asthma, headaches, migraines, degenerative diseases, cranial adjusting and musculoskeletal conditions.

Originally from South Africa, Joubert graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Iowa and came to Coeur d’Alene from Seattle. Phone: 664-0800.

“With the roadside of Lincoln Way in Coeur d’Alene being torn up with the expansion of Heritage Place, perhaps a sidewalk can be installed along this busy pedestrian connection between Kootenai Medical Center and North Idaho College.

Pedestrians, including children at Borah Elementary School, also are endangered by the lack of a sidewalk on the north side of Best Avenue between Fifth and Seventh streets.
