It’s in the bag for John Brown Elementary

Correspondent The Spokesman-Review

John Brown Elementary School students entered the Wal-Mart Kids Recycling Challenge this year and ended up hauling 68 bags filled with plastic and paper grocery bags to the local Wal-Mart store.

For each 60-gallon bag collected, the school will earn $5.

The recycling challenge gave the students a chance to learn about the importance of recycling as well as earn money for the school.

“We got really good participation, and the proceeds will be used to purchase books and support the school’s reading program,” said project organizer Jamie Russell.

The school may win additional cash rewards if it places among the top 10 schools in the state bringing in the most bags.

McTeacher’s Night

Don’t forget that John Brown Elementary School’s McTeacher’s Night is tonight, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Stop by for a “McTreat” and a chance to beat the record Garwood Elementary School set a couple of weeks ago.

VFW four-wheeler raffle

Rathdrum Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9894 is selling raffle tickets for a 300cc Polaris Hawkeye four-wheeler.

The drawing will be July 3, and proceeds will be divided between the VFW and Lakeland girls softball.

President Joe Simpson reported the group recently sold $3,000 worth of tickets at Stein’s IGA. “One thing I have to say about Rathdrum is that they definitely support us,” Simpson said. “They’re behind us all the time.”

He also thanked IGA for allowing VFW members the space to sell tickets. “They’re really very community-oriented,” Simpson said. “And we appreciate that.”

Be sure to stop by Stein’s IGA to buy a couple of tickets, or call Simpson at 687-1482.

Just a few bricks short of a full load

Rathdrum’s VFW Post 9894 also is selling bricks to complete the veterans monument it dedicated Nov. 11, 2005.

More bricks must be sold before the final improvements, including installation of two benches, can be completed. Members hope to have the work finished by Memorial Day.

The bricks sell for $35 and can be inscribed with any name or memorial – up to two lines with up to 17 characters on each line.

Bricks can be purchased from VFW members, and forms will be available wherever the four-wheeler raffle tickets are being sold.
