Science, math and cars, oh my

Science, math and hydrogen fuel cell cars will be in abundance Saturday at Lakeland Junior High School in Rathdrum.

It’s the Northwest Regional Science Bowl and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Car Race, and you’re invited.

Middle-school students from across the region, including a team from the Treasure Valley, will converge on the school Saturday to compete in science and math knowledge competitions and also race hydrogen cars.

“It’s almost like a quiz show,” said Dennis Kimberling, coordinator of gifted and talented services at Lakeland Junior High. “We’re expecting about 200 kids.”

Each school has a team of kids divided into the science bowl, math bowl and hydrogen car race.

“It’s whoever has the biggest point total at the end of the day,” Kimberling said.

The winning team gets an expenses-paid trip to the national competition in Denver, courtesy of the U.S Department of Energy. Kimberling’s team won the regional competition last year and made the trip to Denver.

“That was just a fabulous experience,” he said.

Saturday’s competition will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lakeland Junior High.
