In brief: Teen in crash in stable condition
A Bonners Ferry teenager was in stable condition Friday at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane after she was thrown from a car in an accident Thursday evening near Moyie Springs, east of Bonners Ferry.
Rose Abraham, 17, was driving westbound on old Highway 2 when she overcorrected while trying to negotiate a curve, lost control, slid sideways off the road and hit a high-voltage power pole, the Idaho State Police said in a report. The 1994 Chevy Suburban then continued past the pole into a fence, where it overturned at least twice before coming to rest on its top, officers said.
Abraham, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle, police said. She was transported by air ambulance. Passenger Tabatha Covington crawled out on her own. Covington was treated and released.
Alcohol was involved and the investigation continues, police said.
Italian-made cars to be on display
Foreign cars will be in the spotlight Sunday at an Italian car show in North Spokane.
Ferraris, Lancias, Maseratis and Fiats will dominate the blacktop at the Tombari Center Parking lot, one block south of the intersection of Francis and Division near the Tomato Street Restaurant. The show is sponsored by the Spokane Italian Car Club.
Organizers said they are hoping for a big turnout as collectors show off their polished Italian rides. The event takes place from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Work to kick off on swim facility
Gold-painted shovels will dig the first scoops during today’s groundbreaking for the new Southside Aquatics Facility at 61st Avenue and Freya Street.
The event kicks off at 9 a.m. at the construction site as various Spokane County officials get the $5 million project ceremonially started.
“Spokane County is delighted to begin construction on such an exciting project,” said Spokane County Commissioner Todd Mielke. “It’s going to be an outstanding facility that serves the entire county.”
The facility is unlike a traditional swimming pool and features waterslides, a gradually sloping swimming pool and a “lazy river,” which the county bills as “224 linear feet of excitement.”
Officials said the project should be ready for operation by June 2008.

Law officer’s son accused of thefts
The 15-year-old son of a state trooper has been arrested in the theft of six of his father’s handguns, three of which were found loaded at a Federal Way high school, prompting a lockdown.
The boy, a student at E.B. Walker High School in Puyallup, was arrested late Thursday for investigation of six counts of weapons theft, said Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer. Also arrested were two boys to whom he allegedly provided the guns.
Those boys, 15 and 16, are students at Todd Beamer High School in Federal Way. Three of the guns were discovered in the possession of the 15-year-old Todd Beamer student on Thursday, prompting an hourlong lockdown on campus. Investigators found the other three guns in a garbage bin outside the 16-year-old’s apartment in Federal Way, the Federal Way School District reported.
Troyer said the guns had been taken from a safe at the trooper’s home near Puyallup. Troyer added he did not know how the son gained access to them. The boy was being held at Pierce County’s juvenile facility.
