Rogers will fill three jobs
Rogers football coach Ted Lyon, “Southern California, born and bred,” said he is returning home. Lyon resigned as coach last fall and has accepted an assistant principal position in Santa Maria.
His is one of three coaching positions needing to be filled at the school. Besides football, Nicole Kilgore earlier announced her resignation as girls basketball coach and Jaime Browning has stepped down from volleyball.
“We’re hoping to get things wrapped up in the next couple of weeks,” said athletic director Eric Anderson.
Lyon said that if he could have found a way to get it done coaching football he might not have considered moving.
“I didn’t have the answers, but truly believe there are better coaches out there who can push the right buttons and turn it around,” he said. “I gave it my best and am a better person because of my work here.”
Ferris tennis teams cruise
The Ferris boys and girls tennis teams are both 8-0 in Greater Spokane League play with the district tournament just weeks away.
Ferris No. 1 singles player Katie Griffith is 6-1 in league matches. Her only loss is to Mead’s Katrina Schwab (3-1), which she avenged at the Pasco Invitational when she beat Schwab 6-0, 6-3, Ferris coach Mike McLauchlin said. Griffith defeated Lewis and Clark’s Elise Otto (4-1) in three sets on April 18 as the Saxons defeated LC 4-3.
University’s Allie Tabish is 6-2 after defeating East Valley’s Jessica Casebier (5-3) on Tuesday. Mead’s Britta Stime is 6-0. Stime has played two matches as No. 1 singles and four matches as the No. 2 singles player.
Two top No. l doubles teams are still undefeated. LC’s Erica Ehlo and Lyndi Seidensticker, respective volleyball and basketball standouts, are 5-0. Ferris’ Kelsey McLauchlin and Kellie Mays are 3-0. Mead’s Meg Ryan and Erica Norris are 5-1, Gonzaga Prep’s Sarah Bechtolt and Anna Lena Sieber are 4-1 and Ferris sisters Christy and Michelle Curtis are 3-1.
Individual boys standings are not available, LC athletic director Jeff Norton said. Norton serves as the GSL coordinator for tennis, and said the standings are not available because of a lack of scores reported.
The Inland Empire Tournament begins is May 4-5 and district preliminaries start the May 8.
Big numbers arrive
Good weather arrived with the midpoint of the track season and area athletes are responding.
In addition to Joe Zimmerman‘s 202-foot throw in the javelin – the best by an area athlete since the restricted-flight implement was introduced in 2002 – there are two other big-time records.
Overlooked in the Mooberry Relays on Saturday – because two-person totals are used to determine winners in field events – Ferris junior Kelly McNamee cleared 5 feet, 9 inches in the high jump and Mt. Spokane senior Jordan Roskelley went 12-8 in the pole vault, No. 2 all time in the state.
Also at Mooberry, David Musson of Colville threw the javelin 200-1, and a number of runners moved to the state lead, or near it, in various events.
WIAA meeting notes
The WIAA Representative Assembly approved 13 amendments to its handbook during last weekend’s Board of Directors April meeting.
Two were most significant.
An amendment requiring school board approval of any coaching stipends or gifts given by booster clubs was approved.
Classification enrollment percentages will be adjusted every four years instead of eight.
“Also during the meeting, the Board approved state volleyball sites for 2007. The 2A, 3A and 4A tournaments will be in Kennewick, the 1B, 2B and 1A will be in Yakima.
Each classification will play two days.
