Prep Roundup: East Valley earns GSL soccer title

Matt Miller scored off an assist from Josh Polello in the 64th minute, giving East Valley (9-4, 9-1) a 2-1 Greater Spokane League boys soccer win Friday over visiting Central Valley (7-6, 5-5), clinching the regular-season championship on the final day of league play.

Andrew Mastronaradi scored the Knights’ first goal in the 41st minute, but the Bears’ Stephen Grinalds responded with a goal in the 57th minute.

Elsewhere in the GSL, Lewis and Clark (10-4, 8-2) wrapped up the 4A No. 2 seed with a 3-0 shutout of host Shadle Park. The Tigers outshot the Highlanders 14-4. … John Sittser, Mike Shriver and Jason Hamer all scored as Mead (10-3, 7-3) topped visiting Mt. Spokane 3-1. Nick Reilly scored the lone goal for the Wildcats (2-12, 2-8). … Connor Payton scored two goals, leading Gonzaga Prep (7-6, 5-5) to a 4-1 win over visiting North Central. The Bullpups outshot the Indians 17-8.

Seedings for the 3A regional and 4A district tournaments have been set. East Valley is the No. 1 seed to the 3A regional. The Knights will host the No. 4 Columbia Basin League team. Mt. Spokane, which finished ninth overall in GSL, will be the No. 2 seed in 3A, traveling to play the CBL No. 3 team. Both games will be a week from today with times to be announced.

In the 4A district tournament, No. 4 seed Ferris plays No. 5 Central Valley at 5 p.m. Monday at Albi Stadium. No. 3 seed Mead and No. 6 Gonzaga Prep follow at 7.

University is the top seed in the 4A district tournament and will play No. 2 Lewis and Clark Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Albi Stadium with the district tournament and a state berth on the line. The early game will have Monday’s winners playing at 5 p.m.

Softball

Sam Skillingstad pitched a no-hitter as Shadle Park topped host Gonzaga Prep (6-10) 9-0 in Greater Spokane League action. Danielle Lynn hit a grand slam in the second for the Highlanders (16-0), who had 15 hits. …Elsewhere in the GSL, Lewis and Clark (1-15) scored nine unearned runs and beat host Ferris 12-6. Bethany Krahn had three RBIs to lead the Saxons (1-15), who committed 10 errors. … Chelsea Gray went 2 for 2 with two doubles and two RBIs as Mt. Spokane edged visiting East Valley (5-11) 4-3. Delaney Zalud earned her first win of the season for the Wildcats (7-10) after scattering seven hits in the complete game. … Mead took advantage of six Central Valley errors and beat the Bears (10-7) 8-6. Taneesha Pounder picked up the win for the Panthers after allowing one run on three hits in four innings of relief. Jill Pecka had three hits and an RBI for Mead (12-5).

“Riverside (3-12, 2-8) swept host Deer Park (5-13, 2-10) in a Great Northern League doubleheader. Jolene Millspaugh was 3 for 3 with two doubles as the Rams won the opener 11-5. Millspaugh also picked up the win for Riverside after allowing 10 hits in the complete game. In the second game, the Rams scored three runs in the first and cruised to a 4-0 victory. …Elsewhere in the GNL, Colville swept a doubleheader from visiting Medical Lake (5-9, 3-7). The Indians scored 12 runs in the first and coasted to an easy 15-4 win in five innings in the opener. In the second game, Lepp and Cass Stuart each finished 4 for 4 with five RBIs as the Indians won 23-1 in five innings. Jennica Ebel added three hits and three RBIs for Colville (14-0, 12-0). … West Valley swept a doubleheader from host Cheney (6-12, 3-9). Allie Isaac went 3 for 3 with three RBIs as the Eagles won the opener 10-5. In the second game, Brittany Anderson and Stephanie Hjortedal had three hits and two RBIs apiece as West Valley won 10-3. Rachel Meagley earned the win for the Eagles (12-6, 8-4) after allowing six hits in the complete game.
