Previous Kootenai Canvas: Rathdrum Creek
Jo Myers, of Rathdrum, wrote the winning essay that correctly identified the last photo, which was a picture of Rathdrum Creek between state Highway 53 and the BNSF railroad on the west end of Rathdrum.
I am writing this through my husband’s eyes (Tony Myers). Tony was born and raised in Rathdrum. Thank you for the opportunity. It was fun hearing about this little bit of nostalgia.
There are memories in this picture. The recreation has changed over the years. Today we see bikes running over the culvert of Rathdrum Creek as it rolls through the Park and continues under Highway 53. The metal culvert, under the BNSF tracks, replaced a small concrete tunnel which was there in my childhood. In front of the cement tunnel a pool formed where fish collected. In the late summer, when the water was low, we shared the wading pool with the fish. Sometimes the fish were so numerous we could catch them in our hands.
Today, it is different. No wading pool, just cold metal and bikes.
