Out & About

OUTFIELD
Picture too perfect
Inland Northwest hunters who opened the April issue of Field & Stream magazine were intrigued to see something local.
The magazine featured a two-page photo of a man in camouflage paddling down the Spokane River in a canoe loaded with archery gear and a six-point whitetail buck.
When the S-R Outdoors Department queried Spokane outdoor photographer Lon Lauber for details about his eye-pleasing shot, he said canoe-hunting opportunities probably do exist somewhere along the 111 miles of the Spokane River.
But “that photo in Field & Stream was staged,” he said. “I shot the buck up on Mount Spokane then borrowed a canoe and had a friend paddle it up and down the river for half a day while I took pictures.
“In reality, I don’t know much about hunting from a canoe.”
OUTFISH
Hookers go collegiate
March Madness didn’t end last month. The action was just beginning for the fledgling collegiate bass fishing teams starting a tournament season that will culminate this fall with a national title.
The Collegiate Bass Anglers Association isn’t new. The Big 10 Classic has been an annual event for 12 years, but the interest is growing. The association added 25 new clubs this year, bringing the total to 164.
Both Oregon universities are on the list, but none from Idaho or Washington.
Obvious favorite from current list of teams: Pikeville College.
