Meeting will focus on property rights

The Spokesman-Review

Property owners living in the path of a new North Spokane freeway and a proposed widening of Interstate 90 are being invited to an informational meeting about legal rights.

The Spokane law firm of Dunn & Black, which specializes in rights-of-way cases, is sponsoring the meeting from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at East Central Community Center, 500 S. Stone St.

In a prepared statement, the lawyers said they are offering the meeting as a community service to people who may not be aware of their rights in dealing with land and building purchases for the freeway routes.

Five different speakers will provide a legal overview and perspective on the state’s power to acquire land for public use, along with its methods for acquiring that property and its duties in acquisitions.

The lawyers will talk about practical, technical and legal implications of having property taken by the government for a project such as the North Spokane Corridor and I-90 widening.

“The upcoming meeting is the opportunity for property owners to get free information about condemnation from the property owner’s viewpoint,” according to an announcement from the law firm. “This will include a discussion of property rights and what can and should be expected if your property is targeted for taking by the state.”
