OUTTRAVEL

Panhandle plan to designate routes

Off-road vehicle riders, hikers and horse riders who attended dozens of meetings in recent years will get a look at the fruits of their efforts later in August, when the Panhandle National Forests are scheduled to release their forest Travel Plan.

The plan seeks to comply with the national rule declaring that motorized vehicles will be allowed to operate in national forests only on routes designated for motorized use.

Don’t expect everyone to join in a champagne toast when this is released.

OUTRUN

Race route is ‘epic’

Cross-country runners will find a new challenge on Sept. 1 over a 21-kilometer course popularized by British Columbia mountain bikers near Rossland.

The Seven Summits Trail Race will start at Nancy Greene Summit and traverses back to Red Resort on an alpine mountain route that eventually descends through the ski area.

Completed in 2004 by the Kootenay-Columbia Trails society, the Seven Summits Trail has achieved “Epic” status, the highest trail ranking by the International Mountain Bike Association.

OUTFIELD

Camping with bears

It’s a thrill to see a bear in the woods, but it’s not so good when the bear comes into your camp.

Bears that get a taste for human food usually become “problem bears” that eventually must be trapped and relocated or euthanized. How can you help?

Never feed a bear.

Keep your camp clean.

Keep your tent and sleeping bag free of all food odors.

Store food, toiletries and garbage:

•In bear-resistant containers; or

•Within hard-sided vehicles, hidden from view; or

•Suspended at least 10 feet above the ground and 4 feet from any vertical support.
