If you wondered what it’s like to hear two Scots teaching people how to speak basic Spanish, here’s the podcast for you. Coffee Break Spanish, launched late in 2006, features Mark Pentleton and his student, Kara. Both are thick-accented Scots guiding listeners through a weekly lesson en Espanol. Both hosts really do live in the west of Scotland and have produced 34 episodes to date.
The podcast runs roughly 15 to 25 minutes and is easily downloaded from the Coffee Break Spanish site, or through your iPod or iTunes. Begin with the early episodes, starting with basic greetings, and then move along to more difficult topics.
This podcast opens the door to learning how to pronounce the soft “d” and rolled “r” needed in good Spanish. With practice, your next visit to a Mexican restaurant will be linguistically satisfying.
Production quality: Excellent.
Host factor: Quirky and engaging.
Podcast risk: You might learn Spanish but pick up a Scottish accent on your pronunciation.
