Achievements

The Northwest Christian elementary school choir, Pure Joy, was awarded a “superior plus” rating at the Eastern Washington Music Educators Association Choral Festival held recently at Spokane Falls Community College.

Suzanne Smith of Spokane graduated from AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps in Charleston, S.C. Smith is a graduate of Gonzaga Prep.

Kristen Shields, a mathematics teacher at Lakeside High School for the Nine Mile School District was recently awarded a scholarship by The Rachel Royston Permanent Scholarship Foundation, affiliated with Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. Shields will use her scholarship towards a Masters in Teaching degree at Central Washington University.

“ Presidential scholarships were awarded to local students by Eastern Washington University for the 2006-2007 academic year.

Brandon Evans of Spokane was awarded $2,000. The son of Ron and Julie Evans of Spokane, Evans graduated from Shadle Park High School in June.

Joshua Mielke of Spokane received a $2,000 award. He is the son of Terry and Talana Mielke of Spokane and graduated from North Central High School in June.

Justin Stevenson of Spokane received a $2,000 award. He graduated in June from John Rogers High School. Stevenson is the son of Richard and Rva Stevenson of Spokane.

Steve Sauther of Spokane was awarded $2,000. Sauther graduated from Shadle Park High in June. He is the son of Gary and Teresa Sauther of Spokane.

Amy Pemberton of Spokane received a $2,000 award. She is the daughter of Loren and Nancy Pemberton of Spokane and graduated in June from Shadle Park High School.

Joshua Bell of Spokane was awarded $2,000. He is the son of Scott and Debra Bell of Colbert and graduated in June from Mt. Spokane High School.

Jon Tyler of Spokane received a $2,000 award. He will graduate in June from North Central High School and is the son of Lisa Tyler of Spokane.

Zack Zappone, a graduate of North Central High School, joined more than 120,000 students in the United States this past month to attend the Presidential Classroom Scholars Program in Washington D.C.

Cameron Anaya, a graduate of John R. Rogers High School, has recently been accepted at Harvard University.

Peter Miller of Spokane has received the 2007 Joseph Heslin Foundation Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Miller graduated from Shadle Park High School.

“ North Central High School announced the winners for the first annual North Central Math Triathlon. Test questions were supplied from Harvard University, MIT, Stanford University, and Princeton University.

“ Westview Elementary recently announced its recipients for character counts-citizenship. Winners are listed by grade level.

Kindergarten: Julian Gonzalez, April Hotrum, Wacekiyawi John, River Thomas, Timofey Voloshenyuk, Matthew Walker.

First grade: Natalie Barcklay, Emmaleigh Chobot, Jonathan Day, Angel Moore, Selena Shaw.

Second grade: London Shoupe-Brommer, Benjamin Davis, Melina Mendoza, Shawna Sykes, Jordan Thompson.

Third grade: Nick Bryant, Madysen Ellis, Madi Milholland, William Rackliff, Derek Thompson, Sammy Tovar, Jacque Villa.

Fourth grade: Shaila Facer, Ciera Mangis, Samantha Reynolds, Kyle Szep.

Fifth grade: Silhouette Hale, Joey Katruska, Alycea Lockridge, Shania Wilson.
