WSU’s Baynes sharp again
Washington State University center Aron Baynes scored in double figures for the fourth straight game Sunday, but his native Australia lost 69-53 to the Czech Republic in a men’s basketball second-phase game at the World University Games in Bangkok.
Baynes had team highs with 16 points and eight rebounds. He is averaging 17.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game.
Also, Israel defeated New Zealand 90-87. WSU’s Thomas Abercrombie had four points, five rebounds and one block for New Zealand.
Golf
Stew Fried won the Sun Dance Amateur on Sunday, this week’s event in the Toyota Series of Golf.
Fried had rounds of 70 and 72 over the weekend for a 2-over-par total of 141 for the championship.
The three low net scores from the field were Kevin Tellez at 129, Bill Burns at 140 and Jay Viollete at 140, qualifying those three for the season-ending Sterling Savings Bank Shoot-Out. Fried also qualified for the event.
