Collison joins U.S. hoops after others pull out

The Spokesman-Review

Kirk Hinrich joined Greg Oden and Shane Battier in pulling out of U.S. training camp Monday, removing what may have been one of the toughest roster decisions the team would have faced.

Seattle forward Nick Collison also was added to the squad, leaving the Americans with 16 players as they return to Las Vegas for practice starting Wednesday. The roster must be trimmed to 12 the day before the FIBA Americas tournament begins on Aug. 22.

Hinrich and Battier withdrew for personal reasons. Oden had his tonsils out last month and opted not to take part in camp.

Hinrich played in all nine games for the Americans last year in the world championships. But with Jason Kidd and Chauncey Billups joining the team this summer, the Chicago guard was likely going to have a tough battle with Utah’s Deron Williams for the third point guard spot.

•Pat Riley said he’ll be back as coach of the Miami Heat for three more seasons.

The 62-year-old gave up coaching in 2003, then returned two years later and led the team to the 2006 NBA title. But the team was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs last spring and he was noncommittal for months about whether he’d return.

•The Golden State Warriors have reached agreement on a buyout with center Adonal Foyle, parting ways with the 10-year veteran.

•The Washington Wizards signed second-round draft pick Dominic McGuire.

•Texas Tech center Esmir Rizvic, who suffered a fractured eye socket when an opposing player elbowed him, will remain eligible for another half season because of the injury.

Trinidad to return

Felix Trinidad is coming out of retirement again, this time for a shot at Roy Jones Jr.

Trinidad, who hasn’t fought since losing to Winky Wright in May 2005 and who’s won only two bouts in the last six years, announced plans to meet Jones in January at an undetermined site.

Trinidad is a former welterweight, super welterweight and middleweight champion. He took 2 1/2 years off before beating Ricardo Mayorga in 2004, but was dominated when he met Wright seven months later.
