Area roundup: Cougar volleyball ready to roll for fans

The Washington State University volleyball team is holding an open scrimmage today at 2 p.m. in Bohler Gym.

Several volleyball alumni will join current team members to take on the returning letterwinners for the Cougars.

Coach Brian Heffernan enters his fourth season at WSU. His 13-player roster includes eight returning letterwinners from a team that contended for the NCAA tournament last year.

The 2007 season begins Friday with the Baden Cougar Challenge at Bohler Gym.

Basketball

North Idaho College player Zach Parks has chosen Carroll College to continue his college career.

Parks, a 6-foot-8 post player, started this past season at NIC and averaged nine points and nine rebounds per game.

Golf

University of Washington’s Nick Taylor won the Canadian Men’s Amateur on Friday, defeating Michael Knigh on the 38th-hole of the match-play final at Riverside Country Club in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Taylor, Husky teammate Darren Wallace and former Husky Alex Prugh of Spokane will play in the U.S. Amateur, beginning Monday in San Francisco.
