Red Sox 8-5, Angels 4-7: At Boston, the Red Sox scored four runs in the eighth inning to take the lead against Francisco Rodriguez, only to see Eric Gagne give it back in the ninth when Los Angeles rallied to beat Boston and split a day-night doubleheader. Clay Buchholz gave the Red Sox six strong innings in his major league debut to pace a win in the opener.
Yankees 6, Tigers 1: At New York, Andy Pettitte pitched eight innings to win his fourth straight start and Jason Giambi homered twice, helping the Yankees beat Detroit. Andy Phillips hit a two-run double and Alex Rodriguez had an RBI double for New York.
Blue Jays 5, Orioles 2: At Toronto, A.J. Burnett won his second straight start, Frank Thomas hit his 506th career home run and the Blue Jays beat Baltimore. Burnett gave up two runs and three hits over 6 1/3 innings.
Indians 2, Devil Rays 1: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Paul Byrd made two early runs stand up, holding Tampa Bay to one run in six innings as Cleveland beat the Devil Rays. Rafael Perez and Rafael Betancourt combined for two scoreless innings before Joe Borowski pitched the ninth for his 34th save in 38 opportunities.
Twins 2, Rangers 1 (10): At Minneapolis, Nick Punto scored on a wild pitch with nobody out in the 10th inning to lift Minnesota to a win over Texas. Matt Guerrier got the win after pitching one inning and allowing two hits.
Royals 9, Athletics 2: At Oakland, Calif., Emil Brown hit his first home run in over a month, Brian Bannister pitched a four-hitter for his first career complete game and Kansas City beat the Athletics.
