In brief: Bears needed at this picnic

The Spokesman-Review

More than 10,000 past students of Central Valley High School are invited to the first all-class alumni picnic Sunday from 2:30 to 8 p.m. at Mirabeau Point Park.

All alumni, including their family and friends, are welcome.

CV High School opened in 1927 on Appleway in Greenacres at the present site of Greenacres Middle School and moved to its current location on Sullivan Road in 1956 and was rebuilt in 2002.

“Our hope is to gather as many Bears as possible and have a great time together,” said Dave Graham, CV Activities Foundation spokesman.

Valleyfest seeks band musicians

Valleyfest is forming an all-city band for its 2007 parade and desperately needs musicians.

Director Peggy Doering said the parade has really gained momentum in recent years by becoming an evening event and attracting community floats from around the region, but could still use a little music.

Former members of marching bands at University and Central Valley, East Valley and West Valley high schools, no matter how rusty, would be perfect performers, Doering said. She estimates the group’s repertoire wouldn’t have to be long by the time the parade rolled around Sept. 21. The parade is roughly a mile.

“I think we could have an all-Valley alumni band,” Doering said. “All they need to learn is one song or two.”

The parade band is being built from scratch. A band director also is needed. For more information, contact Valleyfest at 922-3299

Speed limit will be discussed

A speed limit reduction along the Palouse Highway in Valleyford will be discussed by Spokane County Commissioners at a 5:30 p.m. meeting Sept. 11. Accidents near the highway intersection with Madison Road are behind a proposed reduction to 45 mph. The crossroad is near two businesses and the community post office. The fire department is just a few hundred yards to the west.

Neighborhood Watch to meet

Valleyford Neighborhood Watch will hold a community meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at On Sacred Grounds coffee shop. The neighborhood patrol group formed recently after a rash of burglaries hit the rural community southeast of Spokane. Anyone interested in participating can call 747-6294 for details. On Sacred Grounds is at 12212 E Palouse Highway.
