Ex-Coug Pickler takes second
Washington State University graduate Julie Pickler finished second in the heptathlon over the weekend in Bernhausen, Germany, as the U.S. competed against the host country in combined events.
Pickler, a five-time All American from Sachse, Texas, was competing in her first post-WSU international competition. She scored 5,718 points to finish behind fellow American Lela Nelson (6,022 points).
Pickler threw a personal best in the javelin with a mark of 134 feet, 1 inch.
Junior golf
Sierra Bezdicek and Savana Bezdicek of Colbert, Wash., qualified for the championship flight after the first day of the PNGA Junior Girls’ Amateur Championship at Ocean Shores Golf Club in Ocean Shores, Wash.
Savana finished the stroke-play round with a 4-over 76 to tie for fifth, and sister Sierra finished 12th with an 8-over 80. The two will meet today for second-round match play.
Spokane’s Lauren Howell missed the 16-player cut into the championship flight, finishing 18th with an 83.
