U-16 Shadow end on winning note
The Spokane Shadow U-16 girls soccer team finished off a successful summer tournament season with a first-place finish at the Rimland Pacific Cup held Aug. 10-12 in Bellingham, Wash.
The Shadow won their first four games before reaching the championship match, where they would need some late heroics to seal the deal.
With seven minutes remaining, Kellie Zakrzewski scored a goal to break a 1-all tie and give Spokane a 2-1 win over the FC Marauders.
Zakrzewski scored a tournament-high eight goals for the Shadow, who also posted shutouts in three of their five matches. Karina Carpenter was in goal for all five games.
Spokane found success at two other tournaments earlier in the summer. The squad went 3-0-1 and won the U-16 gold 2 division at the Pleasanton College Showcase held July 28-29 in Pleasanton, Calif.
Also, the Shadow went 4-0 and took first place at the U.S. Club Region G Championships held in Boise from June 30-July 3.
Spokane Shadow U-16 team roster: Karina Carpenter, Alexa Banaugh, Tanya Baker, Bev Armstadter, Dee Dee Garbe, Jackie McCormack, Ellie LaRocca, Lexi Greenwood, Nicole Fox, Kellie Zakrzewski, Mary Condon, McKenzie Schnell, Melissa George, Delaney Zalud and Kennah Meyer.
The team is coached by Missy Strasburg.
Volleyball
Spokane’s Maddy Lorenz, 18, and Kimberly Latwesen, 14, took second place in the U-18 Doubles Division at the Seaside Beach Volleyball tournament held Aug. 10-11 in Seaside, Ore.
The pair made it all the way to the championship match, where they lost in three games.
Latwesen will be a freshman at North Central High School while Lorenz, a 2007 graduate of Ferris, will play volleyball this fall at Concordia College in Bronxville, N.Y..
Baseball
The class of 2008 Eastern Washington team went 2-3 and finished eighth at the Pacific Northwest Championships held Aug. 13-15 in Portland and Lake Oswego, Ore.
Seven Spokane-area players were invited to participate including: C.J. Perry (Gonzaga Prep), Danny Jordan (University), K.C. Mack (Central Valley), Rusty Shellhorn (Central Valley), Tyler Olson (University), Trevor Shull (Central Valley) and Bryan Peterson (West Valley).
Golf
Several area junior boys participated in the PNGA Junior Boys’ Amateur Championship last week in Burley, Idaho, including Justin Haase and Rob Seibly – who qualified to compete in the championship flight.
Haase and Seibly both were eliminated in the initial match-play round of 32.
Other local competitors included: Taylor Porter, (Coeur d’Alene, first flight, eliminated in quarterfinal); Ryan England (Nine Mile Falls, second flight, eliminated in semifinal); Tyler Johnson (Hayden, second flight, eliminated in quarterfinal); Peter Gullickson (Spokane, fifth flight, lost in championship); Tanner Robb (Liberty Lake, fifth flight, eliminated in quarterfinal); Alex Pounds (Coeur d’Alene, sixth flight, eliminated in semifinal); Evan Dyar (Spokane, seventh flight, eliminated in quarterfinal).
The tournament was played at the Burley Municipal Golf Course.
