In brief: Pools close Friday for the season

The Spokesman-Review

Friday is the last day to get swim time in at Spokane Parks and Recreation’s public pools.

The pools close for the season at 4 p.m., with the exception of Witter Pool, which will be open for lap swimming from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Sept. 19.

The cost of lap swimming is $2 or a valid extended season lap pass.

The five outdoor pools are Cannon, at Maxwell Avenue and Elm Street; Comstock, at 29th Avenue and Howard Street; Hillyard, at Columbia Avenue and Market Street; Liberty, at Fifth Avenue and Pittsburg Street; and Witter, at East Mission Avenue and Upriver Drive.

Until Friday at 4 p.m., kids 17 and younger swim for free. Adults 18 and older swim for $2. Open swim at all five pools is from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

Speed limit to increase by plant

Mead-area residents are getting a higher speed limit where jobs used to slow them down.

The demise of Kaiser Aluminum’s Mead smelter eliminated much of the traffic congestion on Hawthorne Road, so county commissioners voted last week to raise the speed limit in front of the shuttered plant.

The limit was to go from 35 mph to 45 mph from a point 2,500 feet east of Nevada Street to Parksmith Drive as soon as new signs could be installed, which was expected to happen this week.
