All about looking good at Open
This week, Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams called press conferences – yes, press conferences – to announce what they’re wearing to the U.S. Open.
For the record, Sharapova (above) favors a Swarovski crystal-laden number that pays homage to the New York skyline. Williams is going more low-key, wearing an outfit from her new clothing line created with budget-minded retailer Steve & Barry’s.
The U.S. Open begins Monday.

Jacobsen puts up bounty for clubs
Peter Jacobsen wants his golf clubs back.
The PGA Champions tour player is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the return of a set of Titleist clubs he uses on the tour, and three other bags of clubs with sentimental value.
The clubs were stolen Thursday from the garage of his condominium in Cedar Mill, Ore. The older clubs included a set he used at Lincoln High School and at the University of Oregon.
Sheriff’s deputies said the clubs have an estimated value of $28,000.
Jacobsen said his tour clubs were tailor-made five years ago for his body size, shape and his style of game.
“When you get fit for a set of clubs it’s like getting fit for a tuxedo or a prom dress or a tailored suit,” he said.

Arizona grabs Tacoma guard
Arizona received its first commitment of the 2009 class, Top 25 guard Abdul Gaddy of Tacoma’s Bellermine Prep.
While Gaddy was unavailable for comment, his summer coach, Gary Ward, said Gaddy had a lifelong dream to play for the Wildcats.
The efforts of Washington coach Lorenzo Romar and UW assistant Cameron Dollar made it tough to leave home, Ward said, but Gaddy’s attendance at Arizona’s elite “skills” camp last week clinched the deal.
During the camp, scheduled to coincide with the UA’s reunion weekend, Gaddy met Wildcats coaches, plus plenty of current and former players.
Gaddy, known for his quickness and court sense, is rated No. 14 by Rivals.com and No. 25 overall by Scout.com in the class of 2009.
