In brief: Third man sentenced for NHL gambling ring
The last of three men who ran an illegal sports gambling ring was sentenced to two years’ probation in Trenton, N.J., Friday.
James Ulmer, 42, was charged with conspiracy and promoting gambling in the bookmaking operation with links to the NHL and the Phoenix Coyotes.
Coyotes assistant coach Rick Tocchet, former state trooper James Harney and Ulmer were charged in the case. Tocchet was sentenced to two years’ probation and Harney to five years in prison.

Wade gets 20 years
Former Arizona State running back Loren Wade, convicted of second-degree murder in the 2005 slaying of another ex-Sun Devils football player, was sentenced to 20 years in a Phoenix prison.
The 23-year-old Wade faced a possible 10 to 22 years.
He was charged in the death of Brandon Falkner, who was shot outside a nightclub in suburban Scottsdale, Ariz., on March 26, 2005.
“Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen confirmed he underwent arthroscopic surgery this past spring to remove a bone spur from his throwing arm. Clausen, rated by many as the top high school recruit last winter, described it as a minor setback.
“South Carolina safety Emanuel Cook was arrested on a gun charge in Columbia, S.C., and suspended from the university.
The 19-year-old player was charged with unlawful possession of a pistol.
“Tennessee tailback LaMarcus Coker, the team’s leading rusher last season who was indefinitely suspended two weeks ago for undisclosed reasons, will rejoin the team.

Miller won’t return
Reggie Miller is staying retired, passing on a chance to turn the Big Three of the Boston Celtics into the Fabulous Four.
Miller told the Celtics his decision after having several conversations with Danny Ainge, Boston’s executive director of basketball operations, during the past two weeks.
