Yankees 7, Tigers 2: At Detroit, Johnny Damon homered and tripled, Melky Cabrera added a three-run triple and Chien-Ming Wang delivered eight effective innings for New York. The win evened the four-game series, and gave the Yankees a three-game edge on the Tigers in the wild-card race. New York trails Seattle by two games.
Devil Rays 14, Athletics 3: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Scott Kazmir struck out a franchise-record 13 batters as Tampa Bay won its second straight over Oakland by a combined score of 26-5.
Indians 9, Royals 4: At Kansas City, Mo., Grady Sizemore and Victor Martinez homered, and Aaron Laffey won in his third big league start for Cleveland. The Indians batted around in a five-run first against Kyle Davies before Sizemore led off the second with his 22nd home run. Red Sox 14, White Sox 2: At Chicago, Tim Wakefield’s knuckleball baffled the White Sox and sent surging Boston to another victory. Wakefield allowed three hits in seven shutout innings and joined teammate Josh Beckett as the major league’s only 16-game winners as Boston pounded Chicago pitching.
Blue Jays 9, Angels 2: At Anaheim, Calif., Gregg Zaun had two RBIs, scored a run with a headfirst slide and staved off another on a play at the plate, leading Toronto to victory. Shaun Marcum won for the sixth time in his last seven starts.
Twins 8, Orioles 1: At Baltimore, Torii Hunter hit a three-run homer to spoil the major league debut of Radhames Liz, Jason Bartlett went 4 for 4 with two RBIs, and Minnesota handed the Orioles their fifth straight loss.
