Wanted man makes a break for it – really

From Staff Reports The Spokesman-Review

A convicted felon wanted on drug charges suffered a compound fracture to his leg Saturday when he ran into the side of a moving vehicle, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

About noon Saturday, Spokane Valley police received information from a bail bonds employee that Brandon M. Chance, 20, was at the Mirabeau Park Hotel at Sullivan and Mission. He was wanted in Spokane on outstanding warrants charging him with delivery of controlled substance.

Officer Scott Bonney responded and was stopped in the left turn lane at Mission when he saw Chance and three persons running from the hotel, Sgt. Dave Reagan of the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release. Bonney watched as the first man ran across Sullivan westbound and missed the traffic, then watched as Chance took a run for it.

“Chance wasn’t so lucky and ran into the side of a southbound Ford Taurus driven by 26-year-old Nakia Conklin of Spokane Valley,” according to the press release.

The impact threw Chance up onto the car, where he rolled onto the windshield and was thrown off the vehicle.

Chance tried to run on his fractured leg but went down to the pavement in extreme pain, Reagan said. Chance was taken to a downtown hospital where he was under guard following surgery.

The persons who were with Chance were found, interviewed and released.
